Dell Venue 8 7000 Ultraslim Tablet Reaches the FCC

Interestingly, the Dell Venue 8 7000 started to become hyped because of the iPad Air 2, that claimed it was the slimmest tablet on the market. Well, actually the Dell Venue 8 7000 is slimmer, at 6 mm, compared to the 6.1 mm iPad Air 2. Today the Dell product reaches the FCC, as it gears for launch.
dell-venue-8-7000-fcc
This unit runs Android and relies on an Intel Atom Moorefield processor, plus it packs an 8.4 inch 2560 x 1600 pixel OLED display and an interesting Intel RealSense Snapshot camera. The product is expected to be priced at $499 and it should come to the stores in a few weeks. The RealSense camera is able to shoot 3D pictures and also apply extra 3D effects to pictures, looking very cool.
The Venue 8 7000 also offers a 21 Wh battery, a microSD card slot and there will also be a LTE version in the future. From what I see the device has an elongated form factor and minimal bezel and it looks more like a Nexus 7 than a Nexus 9, if you really want a comparison.

OnePlus Black Friday Sale puts accessories on discount

If we know one thing about OnePlus, it’s that they love to throw promotions. With Black Friday coming up tomorrow, they’re jumping on the bandwagon with the OnePlus Black Friday sale. As you’d expect, there is a “catch” if you want to get a deal.
OnePlus tried some different tricks to promote the OnePlus One. Sometimes they worked, other times… not so much. The OnePlus Black Friday sale unfortunately doesn’t include their smartphone, but it will allow you to save a few bucks on accessories if everyone gets on Facebook to do a bit of sharing.
The OnePlus Black Friday sale is directly tied to Facebook as they are asking their fans to Share items online to unlock the discounts. For instance, the OnePlus Silver Bullet earphones cost $14.99, but at 2,000 shares everyone will get a 5% discount and it goes up from there. Some of the OnePlus One accessories listed include the retail clear case, data cable, tempered glass screen protector, and the aforementioned earphones. The max discount on any item is 20% and that requires 20,000 shares.
If you actually managed to purchase an OnePlus One handset, the OnePlus Black Friday sale is right up your ally. Otherwise, the sale is useless unless you want to pick up the Silver Bullet or the JBL E1+ earphones. Either way, it’s good to see the company putting up a sale allowing their followers to get a discount on accessories.

Samsung, Micromax dominate Indian smartphone market in Q3: IDC

Indian smartphone shipments in Q3Samsung and Micromax continue to dominate the Indian smartphone market and the companies accounted for 44 percent of the total smartphone shipments in the country last quarter. According to latest report from research firm IDC, a total of 23.3 million smartphones were shipped in India in Q3, 2014, up 27 percent quarter-on-quarter and 82 percent year-on-year.  The country also emerged as the fastest growing smartphone market in the Asia-pacific region during this period.
Coming to the company-specific shipments, Samsung was responsible for 24 percent of the shipments, followed by Micromax with 20 percent, Lava and Karbonn with each 8 percent and Motorola with 5 percent. Others accounted for 36 percent of the market share.
IDC notes that the big numbers in Q3 were mainly because of the festive demand and the vendors are likely to have left with inventory going in Q4, thus the next quarter won’t see huge growth.
Among other observations, the research firm states that the demand for phablets is stagnating but is likely to rise as 4G roll-out picks pace next year and the consumers have better access to access media on the go.

Google Play logoGoogle has announced that it has launched its Google Play app store in Cuba. The Android users in the country will now be able to download free apps and games from the Play Store on their smartphones.
No access to paid apps or games is currently available because of the United States’ long-standing export embargo on Cuba.
The app developers can now head over to Google Play developer console to make or stop their apps being available in Cuba.
In addition, to Play Store, Google has also opened the access to Analytics in the country, however similar to Google Play, only free Analytics accounts are currently supported in Cuba. To remind you, Google had launched its Chrome web browser in the country in August this year.

Apple to discontinue production of iPhone 5C next year

A report posted by Taiwan's Industrial and Commercial Times states that the iPhone 5c production will likely stop in the middle next year.
The company did not cite any specific reason for the withdraw of the model, but dwindling interest seems like a likely explanation. In September the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 was introduced, along with the iPhone 6 Plus phablet and stores still offer the 5s model for as little as $99 in certain deals. So saving just $100 on the plastic iPhone 5c is not a viable option for many.

The 5C was unveiled last year as a low-cost alternative to the very popular iPhone 5s and it is basically a plastic-dressed iPhone 5.
Statistics show that during the last quarter of 2013, the device was doing quite alright, even outselling Samsung premium devices on certain carrier contracts, like AT&T and Sprint. Sales of the 5c however failed to meet initial expectations and have slowly been dwindling ever since. It seems that more and more users are looking towards the premium iPhone 5s if they need a lower-cost/more compact iOS phone now.
Even though the iPhone 5c was expected to be geared towards budget users, with its regular retail price set at about $550 was never actually set to be a budget smartphone. It never stood out as a "cheap" phone and was quite out of reach to developing markets.
Without seeing a detailed report of Apple`s sales, which is unlikely, given that they only put out total numbers, it is really hard to accurately determine how successful the Apple iPhone 5c actually was.
One thing is for sure though, the enormous demand for this year's iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models and the availability of the 5s in retail will make sure no one misses the iPhone 5c.

English version of mobile game Dragonsaga Prelude coming to Southeast Asia

Asiasoft’s luck with mobile games has picked up only recently, but the company is working well within the mobile game publishing timeline to end 2014, as told by its CEO Pramoth Sudjitporn to Games in Asia in a recent interview.

Sudjitporn promised that Asiasoft would be releasing seven mobile games for different territories before the end of the year, and it’s doing just that. The latest mobile game we’ve learned about is Dragonsaga Prelude, a mobile Dragonsaga game developed by South Korean studio Funigloo.

Dragonsaga Prelude was first released for the South Korean market via Kakao in April, and can be played here. It’s very similar to its PC sibling, with the same instance-based hack-and-slash action. Dragonsaga for the PC was slated to be published under NHN Singapore a couple of years back, but never saw the light of day. The game uses the same assets as the old favorite, Dragonica, an early instance-based hack-and-slash PC MMORPG published by IAH Games, which could explain the visual similarity between the two.

At G-Star 2014, a Funigloo rep told us that Dragonsaga Prelude will be published by Asiasoft in Southeast Asia. Asiasoft’s marketing communications manager Ian Purnomo has confirmed it will be publishing the game, but did not provide specific launch details.

Asiasoft will likely be publishing an English version, and possibly localizing the game into other Southeast Asian languages as well.

While we don’t have many more details to share about Dragonsaga Prelude, you can check out its trailer here:

Who would kill a 93-year-old?

On the morning of October 24, Mr. Zhu stepped through the doors of his grandfather’s high-rise apartment in Neijiang, Sichuan, China and into a scene from his nightmares. His 93-year-old grandfather lay still in the bed, his face white as a sheet, his upper body covered in blood. A quick check confirmed the obvious: the elder Mr. Zhu was dead.

Who would kill a 93-year-old?

According to Sina Games, when Neijiang detectives first visited the scene on October 24, they were baffled. Why would someone kill a 93-year-old man? His family was equally baffled. Aside from occasional trips outside to sell knick-knacks, the nonagenarian didn’t get out much, and the family wasn’t aware of any enemies or grudges their grandfather might have had. The only hint at the crime’s motive apparent on the scene: a wicker basket belonging to the elderly victim had disappeared from his apartment. Police also found a single cigarette butt on the apartment’s terrace.

Neijiang, Sichuan, China

The initial inspection of the crime scene showed that the attack bore a striking resemblance to a string of robberies that had plagued Neijiang over the month of October. The victim lived on the top floor of his building and the suspect had apparently entered from the roof via the window at night, which matched the MO in the previous robberies. But when police captured the perpetrator of the earlier crimes, it became apparent that he couldn’t have committed the murder. The Neijiang forensics lab also determined that the DNA collected from the discarded cigarette at the murder scene did not match the DNA of the suspect in the other robbery cases.

So, police were back to square one. Detectives returned to the crime scene to conduct further investigation and found that in the terrace’s vegetable garden, a thin dirt outline revealed by the rain suggested an rectangular object – probably a brick – that was once there had been recently displaced. Given that the Neijiang medical examiner had ruled the elder Zhu’s death a homicide caused by blunt force trauma to the head with a rectangular object causing skull and brain damage, detectives suspected that the missing brick might be the murder weapon.

Unfortunately, they had no idea where the killer might have put it after the crime.

A stone-carved confession

Three days after Zhu’s October 23 murder, detectives returned to the scene again, hoping to recover the brick or find some other clue that could point them in the right direction. They succeeded. In faint scratches on the stone of the apartment’s terrace, they found the following message. (Note: in the below image the difficult-to-see writing is highlighted in red):

The message contains an apparent mistake (the author used an incorrect homophone character) and the final character is only partially visible, but the message is still easy to decipher: “ZYL, please forgive me.”

Detectives guessed that given the context of the message and given that the victim’s surname was “Zhu,” the letters “ZYL” were probably initials. A quick check revealed that indeed Zhu had a great-granddaughter with the initials ZYL.

Zhu’s great-granddaughter was never a serious suspect herself given that she was just 14 years old. But her initials appearing at the crime scene suggested that the perpetrator had a connection to her, and a little additional legwork determined that Zhu had previously brought classmates to visit her grandfather’s home.

Among those classmates, a 17-year-old boy surnamed Li caught the detectives’ attention, mostly because all of the other classmates that had visited her grandfather seemed unlikely suspects. Li also fit with a story police heard from one of the elder Zhu’s neighbors, who said she had seen a young man hanging around the area prior to the crime.

Police picked up Li for questioning on October 28 at a local internet cafe, and he quickly confessed to the murders.

How a boy became a killer

Li told police that he had just returned to Neijiang after working elsewhere, but he didn’t want to go home. What he wanted to do was play online games. Although he continually visited internet cafes, in the weeks before the murder Li had so little money that he could not afford a place to sleep. Remembering his visit to Mr. Zhu’s home with his classmate, Li began to access the terrace of Zhu’s apartment, spending his nights sleeping on the floor there. The elder Zhu caught him once and chased him away, but nothing further came of it.

Eventually, though, Li needed money to keep playing, and the idea of committing a robbery entered his mind. Being familiar with the elder Zhu’s apartment at this point, it was his first stop. But when Li reached the apartment, his humiliation at being driven out by the elder Zhu began to gnaw at him, and he thought about revenge. By his own telling, he hemmed and hawed at some length, picking up the brick and entering Zhu’s room repeatedly but not being able to go through with the attack. Finally, after several failed attempts, Li stepped out onto the terrace, smoked a single cigarette, and picked up the brick again. He stepped back into the room, smashed Zhu three times in the head with the brick, and then left the apartment with RMB 160 (US$26) in cash and Zhu’s wicker basket. He threw the bloodied brick off of the building’s roof.

A subsequent search of the surrounding area turned up Li’s discarded brick, confirming the veracity of his tale.

As crazy as this story seems, Li’s crime isn’t as uncommon as you’d think. Gaming and web addiction is a serious problem in China, and this is far from the first time that a gaming addict has been driven to robbery and murder in an attempt to fund his gaming habits.
